Before reaching Glencolmcille, a beautiful standing stone rises up on the right: crosses with geometric patterns are carved on the rectangular surface. There are many of them, and they are a popular place of pilgrimage on June 9. Feast of the region's patron saint, Saint Columba, also known as Saint Colmcille or Columbcille, who is said to have founded a monastery here in the 6thcentury ; the ruins of Saint-Columbcille church can be seen just outside the village. The area around the village was already inhabited 5,000 years ago, as evidenced by the large number of megalithic monuments, especially courtyard cairns and standing stones.
