population: 36,823. Formerly a French trading post and still under the jurisdiction of Pondicherry, Mahé (Mayyazhi in Malayalam) is a pretty little town along the coast. It owes its name to François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, a French captain. However, there's little in the way of tourist infrastructure, no historical sites (apart from a bust of Marianne and a few colonial buildings), and the absence of taxes on alcohol and the profusion of liquor stores unfortunately make it the haunt of northern Kerala's drunkards. A stop along the way is more than enough to give you an idea of this small town, which can easily be explored on foot.
