This small town of 54,787 inhabitants is considered the cultural capital of the Kannur district. Also known as Nileshwaram, it is one of the best gateways to the backwaters of northern Kerala. The state's longest pedestrian bridge (400 m) links Kottappuram to Achamthuruthi: built of wood, its crossing allows you to enjoy the bucolic landscapes of the surrounding area. Its superb deserted beach has attracted investors and a number of quality establishments have opened along the coast in recent years. Swimming is possible and, if you get up early, you can watch the boats depart. However, Nileshwar still retains its typical atmosphere of a small fishing village, far from the hustle and bustle of tourism.
