Bylakuppe is a small Tibetan enclave made up of two refugee camps: Lugsum Samdupling (since 1961, shortly after China's invasion of Tibet) and Dickyi Larsoe (since 1969). This peaceful little town of around 18,000 inhabitants, located 82 km from Mysore, is an important center of Tibetan Buddhism and makes a pleasant stopover. The imposing Golden Temple (Namdroling monastery) is well worth a visit. The comings and goings of monks, the scent of incense and Tibetan chanting lend the place a mystical atmosphere. There are numerous stores, cafés and restaurants serving Tibetan specialities.
