This small fishing town saw the arrival of the British in 1683, who made Thalasserry one of their trading posts, particularly for exporting spices. The town center is built around the fort, along the beach, and the fish market. It was in Tellicherry, as it is still called, that the first English-Malayalam dictionary was written by Hermann Gundert. It was also here that the British first introduced cricket, circus and cake to Kerala. You can stroll along the beachfront jetty and watch the early morning fish market. The Thiruvangad Sree Ramaswamy Temple, dedicated to Rama, is worth a visit for its copper roof. Located 7 km north of the city, Muzhappilangad Beach is a pretty 5 km long beach, ideal for a stroll or a picnic.
