population: 27,500. Sultan Bathery owes its name to Tipu Sultan of Mysore, who used the town's Jain temple as a military armory. Situated at an altitude of 907 m, it is an excellent gateway to the reserve and surrounding area. The town has no particular charm, but it's the best place to do your shopping in Wayanad (waterproof clothing, hiking boots, torchlight, mini-markets...).
