88,430 inhabitants. Udagamandalam, with its old name of Ootacamund (more commonly known as Ooty), is an ideal highland resort to escape the heat of the plains during the vacations. Located at an altitude of about 2,240 meters in the Nilgiris, the town spreads over 50 square kilometers among tea and coffee plantations. During the high season, tourists flock here. The original inhabitants of this land were the Toda tribe, who had lived here long before the arrival of the British in the 19th century. The Toda way of life revolves around the buffalo, which provides them with milk for their livelihood. Credit for modernizing the town and making it accessible goes to the British, who built the region's first railroad line and made Ooty the summer capital of the Madras residence.
