population approx. 67,000. This small town in the Thrissur district, close to the coast, is famous for being home to the Sree Krishna temple, India's4th largest temple in terms of daily attendance! It's also one of the country's holiest shrines for Hindus. Every year, it hosts the Chembai Sangeetholsavam carnatic music festival. Legend has it that Krishna asked two sages, Guru Brihaspati and Vayu, to transport the idol statue from his temple in Dwarka (now in Gujarat) to Kerala. The town's name is said to derive from a fusion of the names of these two sages: guru and vayu.
