Parur (or Paravur), as well as its twin sister North Paravur born from the partition of the city in two by the Raja of Kochi in the 18th century, are located 30 km north of Ernakulam. This city of 30 000 inhabitants synthesizes well the cultural and religious mixture of this region. There is a very old synagogue, a Syrian Orthodox church, a Krishna temple and a Hindu temple of the goddess Mookambic. In the past, Parur was a small rural village with intensive fishing in the backwaters, but today the town is becoming more and more residential due to its proximity to Kochi and the attractive cost of real estate.
