Halebid is located 30 km from Hassan and 150 km from Mysore. Also called Halebidu or Dwara Samudra, this ancient capital of the Hoysala kingdom (10th to 14th century) has several temples of this period of striking beauty as well as Jain sacred places and a sacred pool. One of these famous temples is the Keddareshwara temple, where the virtuosity of the sculptor seems to have surpassed even the skill of the goldsmith. One kilometer from the Hoysaleswara temple are the Basti hills with Jain basti (temples) with lustrous black stone pillars. Twelve kilometers away is the charming village of Belavadi with its Veeranarayana temple.
