42 km north of Merida, Chicxulub is a historical site. Scientists estimate that this is the point of impact of the great comet that crashed into the Earth 65 million years ago, causing the extinction of the dinosaurs and the end of the Cretaceous era. The crater is nearly 180 kilometres in diameter, so the traces of its fall are not visible to the naked eye. From a tourist point of view, the village is not very interesting. It presents more or less the same landscapes as Progreso (mangroves and turquoise sea), but offers a much less animated atmosphere. Many villas on the coast are available for rent by the day or by the week
