The small port of Telchac lies some 40 kilometers northeast of Progreso. Telchac means "long mangrove roots" in Mayan, and is located on the edge of the Laguna Rosada, whose ecosystem is particularly rich in biodiversity. The port was founded in colonial times, but no buildings have survived. Nevertheless, it's a pleasant stopover on the Yucatán coast. As with Progreso and Chicxulub, the surrounding area is popular with the wealthy inhabitants of Mérida, who have acquired beautiful homes here. Despite this, Telchac Puerto retains an authentic fishing village atmosphere. It boasts several seafood restaurants serving fresh, tasty fish dishes. And if, despite its color, the sea of the Gulf of Mexico is less popular for lounging and swimming than that of the Caribbean, the surrounding points of interest, the Laguna Rosada and the archaeological zone of Xcambo, are well worth a visit and benefit from the lower tourist numbers.
