About 100 kilometres west of Merida, Sotuta can be reached via a detour along the toll-free road to Chichén Itzá. The village is best known through the figure of Nachi Cocom, a Mayan leader who fought against the Spaniards. Two local ecotourism projects will appeal to travelers who want to get off the beaten track. The first is a visit to a cenote, Dzonot Miss, located in the grounds of a private house and the second is a guided tour of caves discovered and open to the public in 2019. The common denominator of these two underground surprises is to access them as if you were going down into your cellar, by long stairs?
