Ihuatzio is located by the lake and is known for its handicrafts and wicker furniture. The place is best known for the archaeological area that bears its name. It is a pre-Hispanic settlement probably built at first by Nahuatl-speaking inhabitants (central Altiplano); the area would later come under the influence of the Toltec Empire, before becoming one of the three capitals of the Tarascan Empire along with Patzcuaro and Tzintzuntzan. In the distance, the magnificent mountains typical of the region cover the whole. It is not the most imposing archaeological zone that you will visit, but the whole is nevertheless magic.
