Zamora, with its impressive cathedral facade and its surroundings (the south), is a less touristy area and offers alternative interests to the classic Morelia - Pátzcuaro - Uruapán route, even more so if you are heading towards Guadalajara or Guanajuato. The city was founded in 1540 by Viceroy Don Antonio de Mendoza. It was populated by four Spanish families, a few bachelors and some indigenous people. Most of the Spaniards came from the city of Zamora in Spain, hence the name. Zamora is known in Mexico for its important production of strawberries. In February, don't miss the strawberry fair.
