Third city of Eritrea after Asmara and Massawa, Keren is the capital of the region of Anseba in which it is located. It is a small province with an undeniable charm, perched at 1 392 m above sea level and surrounded by arid mountains that teintent blue when the sun is couche. While it is true that it no longer has the importance it had at the time of Italian colonization, when it was connected to Asmara by train, Keren still plays a major role in the country's trade. City of markets, plebiscite throughout the country its market to the camels, and some do up to several days driving to get there! Life is slow and pleasant in Keren; perhaps this is why many Eritrean tribes have elected them home? Tigray, Tigrinya and Bilen are côtoient here, and they are the women of this last tribe, which can be crossed around the city, furnished in bright colours with a large gold ring in the nose. (Photogenic, admittedly, it will unfortunately refuse to get caught in photo). As for men, they are mainly dressed in a white thoube (this «robes» worn by the men of the Arabian Peninsula countries) with a turban of the same colour on the head, which contributes to further accentuate the undeniably Arab atmosphere that floats in the city. One thing is certain, be it by the diversity of its population and culture or by the diversity of its architecture (mosques, churches, and Italian houses), Keren will certainly seduce the visitor.
