Travel Guide Barentu

In the heart of the territory of the Kunama ethnic Area, the administrative capital of the Gash Barka region is not particularly beautiful, but has an interesting atmosphere due to its population. There is not much to see or to do, but it is a convenient place to take a break on the long road linking Keren to Tessenei. Hotels, cafes and restaurants are almost all concentrated along the main street. If you pass through Barentu on a Thursday or Saturday, go to the market and be considered one of the most colourful in the country. Occupied by Ethiopian forces in May 2000 during the last war, the city is still heavily controlled militarily.
