The small town of Agordat is located between the Gash and Barka rivers, where the name of the region (Gash Barka) was once the capital, before this function was transferred to the town of Barentu. Formerly a very important city for agriculture, many fruits and vegetables were grown and sent directly to the Middle East. Agordat has since lost its importance, and the city has little interest in the visitor. However, some sites are worth a look if you are here for a few hours: the market and the old railway station, as well as the fort located at the top of the hill where you have beautiful views over the city and its surroundings, especially on the river. It is also possible to walk along the bed of the river and its plantations, which often offers the opportunity to see several species of birds that seem particularly appreciated to be on the many palm trees bordering the river.
