Now the capital of Debub province, in place of Adi Keyh, Mendefera is probably not the most exciting of the country's cities, but its atmosphere is pleasant and much more active than that of most sisters. In trigrinya, the name Mendefera literally means "nobody dared": the inhabitants of the city fought from the hill against Italian colonization, so the hill was never settled. The city is dominated by two hills facing. One is the Catholic church (which also houses a school), which is recognisable to its white bell tower and is reminiscent of a miniature version of St. Mary's Cathedral in Asmara; on the other hill is the Orthodox Church San Giorgio, more modern, it was drawn by the favourite architect of Haïle Hailé: Arturo Mezzedimi.
