Located on the road from Keren to Nakfa, Afabet does not have any special interest for the visitor, if it is not to stop to restore or put petrol into the car during the journey to Nakfa. The recent history of the city is, however, particularly interesting: that is where the Ethiopian army had established its largest military base during the war of Independence. In 1988, the EPLF launched an attack (still considered to be one of the most impressive attacks by a liberation movement) and the military base was captured and the city completely destroyed. More than 18 000 Ethiopian soldiers lost their lives on that day or were taken prisoner. The city has been completely rebuilt since then and has become one of the most densely populated population in the country with more than 20 000 inhabitants.Beware! The mines are still well in the surrounding area and if you decide to walk, keep yourself in the marked paths and avoid walking at night when it becomes difficult to guess the tags.
