The first city on the road connecting Asmara to Senafe, Decemhare was, in the colonial era, one of Italy's favourite cities. Built to be the transport centre of the entire Italian empire in the Horn of Africa in the late 1930 s, it was even equipped with a small airport serving the Italian colonies. An important agro-industrial centre, the city has many warehouses and factories that do not remain very much, except Red Sea General Mills, which bears witness to the high degree of industrialization that the city has ever known.Today, mainly composed of a main main street and a few cross-cutting streets in which it is possible to see, here or there, an example of Art Deco architecture saved by war, it is hard to imagine that one day the city was thought of as the center of an empire and that it was so beautiful that it inherited the sweet nickname of "secondo Roma». Art Deco architects will charm themselves with the few buildings on foot, when the others will only see one small Eritrean town in Decemhare.
