With the generally unenviable status of a border city, Adi Quala is not of disproportionate interest to the visitor. However, the city is green and it is good to stroll along its few cafés and shops. The church of the city has lovely frescoes depicting the battle of Adwa, it is a fine example of traditional Eritrean paintings. The Italian mausoleum, located only 6 km from the city, is an impressive memorial dedicated to the 8 000 Italian soldiers who lost their lives during the disastrous battle of Adwa on 1 March 1896.
