Near this small Tigrayan village lies the capital of the pre-Axum empire, one of the oldest archaeological sites in the world. This is the site of the Sabaean kingdom (that of the Queen of Sheba), which ruled Abyssinia from the 8th to the 7th century B.C. Little is known about this mysterious civilization. Only the stones remain to give us clues about life in the capital at that time. A detour is a must if you're staying in Tigray. On the road to Aksum, 11 km after the village of Enticio and just before Adwa, take the track on the right which, after 5 km, leads to the village.
