The small town of Marchegg is home to a remarkable castle: Schloss Hof. The rural residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, this castle was built by the Baroque architect Lucas von Hildebrandt, before being completely modified by Maria Theresa at the end of the 18th century. The Empress held majestic celebrations here. Under Franz Josef, the court lost interest in this jewel of Baroque architecture, and the building was converted into an army training center. Today, the building is open to the public, who can explore the sovereigns' chambers, a ceremonial hall, a chapel and even the former tenant farm, with craft demonstrations.
