Overlooking Lake Ypacarai and on the heights of San Ber, 8 km away, Altos is the first Franciscan reduction of the Río de la Plata (1580). The church of San Lorenzo dates from the beginning of the 19th century, but its altarpiece is from the Franciscan period. The inhabitants are dedicated to the production of fruits and vegetables, but also to the production of artisanal sausages (they are nicknamed "los Choriceros"). Families work with timbó wood to make sculptures and masks called "kamba ra'anga", which are staged during the fiestas of San Pedro and San Pablo (28 and 29 June) in the neighbouring compañía of Itaguazú. Altos is the birthplace of the musician Luis Alberto del Paraná (1926-1974).
