San Lorenzo, one of the most populated cities in the country (260,000 inhabitants), is nicknamed the "Ciudad Universitaria" (University City) because it is home to the campus of the National University of Asunción. Its historic centre is pleasant, with a green plaza, where the imposing San Lorenzo de Mártir Cathedral, the only neo-Gothic church in the country, stands enthroned. In the surrounding streets are beautiful colonial mansions, one of which houses the Boggiani Museum. From Asunción, take lines 12, 26 or 56. Buses pass by the central park (1 hour trip). For the return trip, take the same buses on Saturio Ríos Avenue, not far from the park.
