Ybycuí (from yvyku'i, "sand" in Guarani) is a small town that lives from agriculture and oil production (coconut, soybean, cotton, sesame). We pass through there to reach the national park of the same name. This is where Bernardino Caballero (1839-1912), founder of the Partido Nacional Republicano (Colorado Party), was born on September 11, 1887. One can notice in the urban landscape the strong presence of the red color of the party: on the houses, the municipality, the church of San José, not to mention the T-shirts of the inhabitants and the ANR stickers on the windshields! But make no mistake, despite its color, its star and its initials, the Colorado Party is the antithesis of the Communist Party! In Paraguay, especially in rural areas, people often join a party by tradition, from generation to generation. And here, we are proud of the local boy, the "Centaur of Ybycuí" (for his ability on horseback). A hero of the Triple Alliance War, from simple cavalry sergeant to general, then president of the Republic (from 1880 to 1886).
