The village takes its name from Bernardino Caballero, not really a saint, but the creator of the Colorado Party who was President of the Republic from 1880 to 1886. It was he who officially founded the town, which was then only a young German colony, Nueva Bavaria, made up of 5 families: the Siedow, Schoenfeld, Degenherd, Staenzel and Wache. San Ber in summer is playa, fiesta y cerveza! Crowds, music, quads, ice cream, sunglasses, dredging... From the end of December to February, the youth of Asunción can be found on the beaches of Lake Ypacaraí and in the clubs. The hotels are full and the smell of grilled meat exhales from the second homes. If you want to party or show off, this is the place to go! Finally... It was the place to go, before the lake started to change color in 2012... Naturally blue, Ypacaraí began to take on worrying green and black hues, due to toxic algae feeding off the pollution generated by the lack of effective water treatment in the towns around the lake. The situation is improving a little, but bathing is still forbidden, and a new problem is emerging: the gradual drop in the lake's level from year to year. San Bernardino is nevertheless worth a visit. It is pleasant to walk along the pedestrian avenue (Nuestra Señora de la Asunción), eating an ice cream (there are many vendors). Observe the architecture of the houses, walk through the park admiring its beautiful trees and go up to the small church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. From there, a path leads up to a viewpoint. For another view of the lake, you can go up to the village of Altos.
