Marshfield was established in 1855, after the area was settled on Osage land. It is named after the home in Marshfield, Massachusetts of a prominent 19th century politician, Daniel Webster, who worked to develop the area. It is the birthplace of American astronomer Edwin Hubble (1889-1953). To honor his memory, a 1/4-size replica of the Hubble Space Telescope, which continues to unlock the secrets of the universe, is on display in the town square. This telescope was launched on April 24, 1990 and is orbiting at an altitude of about 600 km. It makes a complete circle of the Earth every 100 minutes.
