In 1929, Toivo Uuskallio, a Finnish peasant fleeing a harsh Scandinavian lifestyle, bought a vast estate in the state of Rio and invited a hundred families to settle with him in Brazil. He thus founded the Finnish colony of Penedo, 180 km northwest of Rio. The graft took. To this day, the town center, known as "Little Finland", is home to some twenty houses built in typical Finnish architecture, in brightly painted wood. Penedo is a pleasant, quiet village where you can enjoy good local chocolate. As is often the case in Brazil, the change of scenery is always unexpected.
