Troisvierges is one of the northernmost villages of Luxembourg. The commune spreads out over the Kneiff hills and the Buurgplaatz (559 m), the highest peak in the Grand Duchy. Troisvierges was first mentioned in 1353 under the name Ulvelingen, the German name still in use today. Its French name dates back to the 17th century, when Walloon pilgrims used it to travel to the place of pilgrimage dedicated to the three virgins Fides, Spes and Charitas, daughters of Saint Sophia. Despite the opening up brought by the train in the 20th century (Luxembourg-Troisvierges line, in 1866), Troisvierges has remained a large rural centre
