The fame of this city, apart from being the country's nuclear waste disposal site, is its exceptional archaeological site. During excavations conducted in 1908, a Neolithic site was discovered here that surpassed all previously known settlements in Europe. Around 4000 BC, the Vinča culture, characterized by a style of carved statuettes, spread throughout the Danube basin. The prehistoric city became an important religious, economic and cultural center, which strongly influenced agricultural techniques. Some of the typical thousands of years old clay figurines, now known as Vinča, are currently on display at the British Museum in London. Unfortunately, in 2010, the site fell victim to landslides and was preventively buried
