This town of just under 20,000 people owes its name to the Indian tribe of the same name (in the Caddo language: Náshit'ush). It was founded in 1714 by the explorer Louis Juchereau de St. Denis (1676-1744), whose bust stands at the end of Front Street, opposite the tourist office. Incorporated in 1819, after Louisiana became a state in 1812, it is considered the first permanent settlement on land acquired by the Louisiana Purchase. Its historic district, where the majority of our good addresses and points of interest are concentrated, is to be discovered for its rich past and the beautiful architecture of its buildings.
