A small village of less than 200 souls, it was the capital of Texas for nearly fifty years, from 1729 to 1772, when it was called Los Adaes and housed a fort built by the Spaniards to protect themselves from the French who had settled in Natchitoches. When it closed, the inhabitants left for San Antonio. Between 1870 and 1917, a railroad was built to connect Robeline to Marthaville, but its abandonment in the 1960s led to the decline of the village. Nowadays, people go there mainly for its historical site relating the era of Los Adaes and New Spain in Louisiana, the Los Adaes State Historic Site.
