This charming little island is well worth a visit for those in search of peace and quiet and magnificent scenery. Admittedly small, Rolas abounds in sublime deserted beaches, fantastic black cliffs and breathtaking views from its hilltops.Crossed by the Equator and the Greenwich Meridian, it is indeed the island "in the middle of the world". The intersection of these imaginary lines, marked by a world map and a small monument, is located high up in the forest. It's a ten-minute walk from the village. You'll need a full day to discover this island and enjoy its treasures. As well as beautiful walks through lush natural surroundings, you can relax on the island's heavenly beaches, with their turquoise waters that can be rough. Near Praia Café, a botanical garden invites you to discover Santomean culture through its fruits, leaves and medicinal plants. Profits are also used to transport children to school in Porto Alegre. Before Covid, food and accommodation were available at the Pestana Equador hotel, but when we visited, it was closed until further notice. On the Café beach, women offer affordable fish menus at lunchtime. To get to the island, pirogues run back and forth all day long. Expect a 30-minute crossing and a round trip cost of around €10.
