At 2 hours drive from Lambaréné and 45 minutes from Fougamou, Mouila, provincial capital of Ngounié, is built on the Ngounié river which cuts it in two. It is crossed by the N1 from where one has a magnificent view on the mountain of Koumounabouali and, in the distance, on the mount Iboundji. On the right bank, there are administrative buildings, shops and markets, while on the left bank there are hotels and restaurants. Mouila is very large and has the advantage of having many markets and shopping centres close to the districts. Its population amounts to a little more than 20,000 inhabitants. While the province of Ngounié is home to Gabon's greatest mineral wealth, Mouila is sadly at the top of the list of the country's poorest regions.Mouila has renowned secondary schools, such as Saint-Gabriel (in the city centre) and Val-Marie, located 7 kilometres from Mouila. These private Catholic schools, both opened in the 1960s, have welcomed several generations of the country's leading figures. They are now run by Gabonese.Mouila can be reached by a renovated road. The airport is in an advanced state of disrepair and no airline company serves the city
