Ecuadorians still call the mainland region in the Andean foothills between Machala and Loja "Costa". The main tourist attractions of this region are the small villages of Portovelo, Piñas and Zaruma, whose architecture bears witness to a golden era when the mines were generous, as well as the petrified forest of Puyango, further west. 65 km from Machala (about 2 hours by bus), located on the road to Loja, Piñas has made orchid cultivation its main activity. The "Orchid of the Andes", as this big town is called, shakes every year its languor to the sounds of the carnival music.
