At the western end of the country, 150 km from Loja and 110 km from Machala on the Peruvian border, it is probably the largest petrified wood reserve in the world (see article in the «Pacific Coast» section after Machala). We go there by bus, direction Machala. At 30 km from Puyango, there is a military area where the passport is required (Peru is bordering!).The road from Loja to Vilcabamba is practically a cul-de-sac; You will have to go back to Loja to go to Machala and then go back to the Pacific coast, or move to Macara to enter Peru. The village of Zumba, border crossing south of Vilcabamba, painstakingly accessible is reserved for the most adventurous.
