At the western end of the country. 150 km from Loja, 110 km from Machala and 70 km from Huaquillas on the Peruvian border. It is probably one of the most important reserves of petrified (or fossilized) wood in the world. Le Petrificado de Puyango was declared a national heritage in 1988 and remains a protected area.
