40 km south of Loja. 5,000 inhabitants. In Quichua, Vilcabamba means "sacred valley", and it's true that this village nestled in a valley 1,730 m above sea level enjoys an eternally spring-like climate (18°C to 22°C). It is watered by two rivers: the warm Chamba and the cold Uchima. Founded in 1576 by Luís Hernando de la Vega, the town enjoys an international reputation that has earned it the nickname "City of Centenaries", along with two other unique places in the world, Funza in Pakistan and Kokasas in Russia. In the 1950s, an American revealed to the world the existence of this paradise where the sick miraculously regain their health and the inhabitants live beyond the age of 100! Here, it is said, death has taken a vacation. Teams of scientists, doctors and journalists from all over the world have sought to unravel this mystery. The secret of their longevity (although the longevity of the valley's elders is actually less than claimed) can be explained by a number of factors: vegetarian diet, mineral water with curative properties for cholesterol and rheumatism, an even climate (and 65% humidity), and a total absence of stress. Whatever the case, thanks to its unparalleled serenity, eternal springtime, bucolic landscapes, enchanted valleys and mountains, Vilcabamba is welcoming more and more visitors in search of an invigorating stopover. As property prices soar, fewer and fewer locals are staying in the village. Beware of its charm: this small, friendly village is one of the most charming in the country. There's plenty to do here, and people often stay longer than expected. Sometimes, you'll never come back, which is why so many establishments open and reopen year after year. Vicabamba is like a little paradise for travellers from all over the world. Not to be missed: the Saturday morningorganic market in the square, when life in Vilcabamba is in full swing.
