This small inland village was home to a 3,000 ha ha hacienda and a sugar refinery whose product was sold to Guayaquil, founded in 1888 by Manuel Cobos, a cruel and despotic man. He was murdered by his slaves in 1904. The village contains remains of old houses and the area has organically grown coffee plantations. El Progreso was the first village in the Galapagos and has kept a nonchalant character typical of the inland villages. It is cool and foggy from May to November but hot and rainy the rest of the year. A village that deserves a visit.
