The town known as the Central American capital of faith is located less than 60 kilometers southeast of Chiquimula, on the CA10. Its interest lies in the festival held every January 15 in honor of the Cristo Negro, a wooden sculpture delivered in 1595 by the craftsman Quirio Cataño. The city fills up: pilgrims from all over Central America flock to the basilica, while the streets become the scene of colorful processions that are accompanied by traditional dances, such as the Moros y Cristianos, inherited from the Conquista. Apart from this unique and unmissable event, if you are in the area, Esquipulas is home to some relics of the past. We should also mention the beautiful view from its vantage point, on the CA10, shortly before the entrance to the town.
