Like Ceibal, Aguateca is one of the most visited ancient cities of the Petén. In cause: its magic environment, at the edge of the lagoon Petexbatún. With an area of some 1,683 hectares, the site is covered by a vast tropical forest, which is home to many species of trees and a rich fauna, ranging from the spider monkey to the oncilla - also known as "tiger cat" - through the bat hawk, a small raptor with amazing plumage. Moreover, the chances of seeing howler monkeys are tenfold in the morning; in the afternoon, you will be satisfied with hearing them. Another special feature is the geological fault that runs through the area, once used as a natural fortress.
