Founded in 1839 and located 75 km north of Cobán, this town boasts magnificent surroundings that are often overlooked on tourist circuits. Lagoons, lakes and caves are all available to the traveller in a limited space. Within a 10 km radius are the Laguna de Sepalau to the east, and the Cuevas de B'omb'il Pek and Jul Iq' and the Río San Simón to the north. Bordered by cardamom plantations, lush forests and high rocks, its turquoise waters are ideal for tubing.
