The existence of the Mayan city of Bonampak was revealed in 1946 by Carlos Frey (Swiss) and Giles Healy (American), informed of its location by the Lacandon Indians who lived nearby. The site itself does not stand out for its architectural grandeur compared to other archaeological areas in the region: it is nevertheless a unique reference in terms of sculpted stone lintels, engraved stelae and wall paintings. The city's apogee corresponds to the classical period (300 to 900 AD), when it was closely allied with the city of Yaxchilan.
