Located near the mouth of the Rio São Francisco, the small town of Penedo, unjustly ignored by tourism, is one of the most beautiful testimonies of the colonial period in the Nordeste. Founded in the first half of the 16th century, it represented for a long time, because of its location, an important strategic stake between the Dutch and the Portuguese for the control of the region. It is rich in colonial buildings, beautiful mansions and baroque churches, most of them in very good condition. It is also an ideal starting point for navigations on the river, very lively in this place where countless boats come and go
