Situated on the right bank of the Sekong River, 80 kilometers as the crow flies upstream from Steung Treng, Siempang is a small town that lazily spreads out along 5 kilometers of riverbank. The population is 90% Laotian, but there are a few Kaveth villages around. Although all the villagers speak Lao among themselves, Khmer is widely spoken, if not English or French, of course. Siempang is reserved for those with a lot of time on their hands. Around Siempang, you plunge straight into the forest or into the tumultuous waters of the Sekong River, itself lined with forest all along its course.
