Wat Phou is located 8 km southwest of Champassak, at the foot of Bassac Mountain, whose resemblance to a woman's bun earned it the name Phou Kao. The mountain behind the temple was named Linga Pavarta by the Khmers who saw a resemblance with a shivalingam. It could be that the choice of the location of Wat Phou is due to the presence of this sacred mountain originally dedicated to Shiva, a Hindu deity. On December 25, 2002, an area of 390m2 of this archaeological site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This temple with its much more modest proportions than the temples of Angkor, is nevertheless interesting, especially for archaeology enthusiasts. On theevenings of full moon, Wat Phou glitters with a thousand lights. Candles are spread all around the site and shine all night. On this occasion are also organized concerts of traditional music. The show is part of the festival of Vat Phou, which takes place every year on the 15th day of the waxing moon of the3rd month (in January or February) and coincides with the Buddhist festival of Makha Busa. The celebration of the Full Moon comes to close the festival. Devotees come from far and wide to attend this ceremony, from Laos, Thailand and Cambodia.
