About 40 km south of Pakse. The town stretches for several kilometres along the Mekong River, at the foot of two mountains: Phou Kao ("mountain of the bun") and Phou Kiou ("mountain of the fault"). It is thus bordered on one side by the river and on the other by rice fields. The population is composed of Lao Loum and Lao Thin. There are still in Champassak (or Chapasak) some colonial houses dating from the beginning of the 20th century. The best time to go there is from the end of October, when the rainy season is over. Hotels and guesthouses along the road often have their own restaurants. Champassak is a very pleasant stopover.
