Further north, just before Sanquhar (where the first post office in the world opened in 1763), leaving the A 76 for B 797, Wanlockhead is a town of lead mines. Its small museum (Tel 0165 974 387) exposes the last beam engine, a bascule pump. Open every day from September to October from 11 am to 16 pm. In July and August from 10 am to 17 pm.By continuing on the B 797, Leadhills is the highest village in Scotland. Follow the B 797 towards the A 74 leading to Glasgow.
